Genesis 3:9 is a familiar verse, Adam and Eve had eaten the forbidden fruit and they were hiding from God. Folks, that is what sin does, it drives us away from God. God calls out, “Where art thou?” Now, God is not asking that question for Hs benefit, He knew exactly where they were. The question was for Adam and Eve, just where are you?


Beloved, it is profitable at times to put ourselves in a position that if God were to ask that of us, how would we respond? The question “where art thou?” is as valid today as it was centuries ago. The following is a candid assessment for those who are members of the New Testament church.

  • Where is my faith? Little (Matthew 6:30) ___? Weak (Romans 14:1) ____? Great (Matthew 15:28) ___? Faith defined: I know (I John 5:13), based upon evidence (Hebrews 11:1), therefore I live and walk by faith (II Corinthians 5:7; Romans 1:16-17).
  • Where is my prayer life? (I Thessalonians 5:17 - Two parts)
    1. Do I pray every day ____? Do I pray at set times ___? Is my prayer life sporadic ____? Is my prayer life virtually non-existent ____?
    2. Do I pray for the church ___? For those who are ill __? When I pray am I thankful or complaining ___? Is my prayer more self-centered than other people centered __? Do I pray for the lost __? Do I ask God to forgive me when I sin __?
  • Where is my knowledge of the scriptures? (II Timothy 2:15; II Peter 3:18). In the past year my knowledge has: Increased somewhat ___? Increased greatly ___? Stayed the same ___? Decreased ___?
  • Where is my involvement and influence in the church? (Ephesians 4:15-16).The following areas may give us some insight on how to answer that question:
    1. Because I am a member the church is stronger ___? Weaker ___? Unaffected ___?
    2. If the church’s worship and Bible study were based upon my attendance:

                                                               i.      At least four hours would be required ____

                                                             ii.      Three service times ____

                                                            iii.      Two service times ____

                                                           iv.      One service would be sufficient ___

                                                             v.      Would have to decide week by week ____


  • If every member gave after my manner of giving:

                                                               i.      The congregation could continue it’s current commitments ___

                                                             ii.      Expand in the areas of evangelism and missionary work ____

                                                            iii.      Wait and see what is left over ____

                                                           iv.      Curtail our present efforts _____

                                                             v.      Struggle to continue ____


  • If all the church acted toward visitors the way I do, visitors would:

                                                               i.      Find the congregation a friendly place ____

                                                             ii.      Semi-friendly ____

                                                            iii.      Unfriendly _____

                                                           iv.      Cold ______

  • Where am I personally in my walk with Christ? (I Peter 1:8; I John 1:4). Since Christianity is to be a joy filled religion, which of the following would describe me:
    1. I am a joy filled person _____
    2. I am able to rise above situations ____
    3. I am moody:

                                                               i.      Rarely ______

                                                             ii.      Sometimes ____

                                                            iii.      Most of the time _____

                                                           iv.      All the time ______

  • Where am I in my relationship with family? (Philippians 2:15).
    1. I set a proper spiritual example: Yes ____ No ____ Sometimes ___ Poor example ___
    2. I am commanded to love my mate (Ephesians 5:25; Titus 2:4) therefore:

                                                               i.      I am very considerate ___ Pretty considerate ___ Not really that considerate ___

                                                             ii.      I put the needs of my mate above my own: Most of the time ___ Sometimes ___ Rarely _____ Not at all ____

                                                            iii.      As a husband I am to love my wife as I love myself (Ephesians 5:28), am I doing that? Yes ___ No ___

                                                           iv.      As a wife I am to reverence my husband (Ephesians 5:33), am I doing that? Yes ____ No ___


  • As a child in the home I:

                                                               i.      Look for ways to be helpful ____

                                                             ii.      I will help when asked:

1.      Without complaint ___ Grumble a little ____ Pout and say this is unfair ___ Request money for the chore ____

                                                            iii.      I obey my parents:

1.      All the time ____ Most of the time ___ Sometimes ___ Only when threatened ____

                                                           iv.      Does God expect me to obey my parents (Ephesians 6:1-3)? ____

 If God were to ask me –“where art thou?” - How would I answer?
